Grenfell Tower

Grenfell Tower

The Grenfell Tower Fire

I have done a lot of research on this. It wasn't an 'accident'. It was completely avoidable.

If there has been one event that sums up the effects of the Tory government's un-necessary austerity programme, then this is it.

Safety cutbacks: Materials used on the outside of the tower were not tested properly because the fire-testing lab had been privatised and its funding cut.

Gentrification: The tower exterior was re-clad because the rich residents of the area did not like looking at it.

Council money-saving: The cladding used was the cheaper (less fire-resistant) variety. Even the fire-doors were not properly installed.

Fire Service cutbacks: The fire engines and ladders were not suitable for the tower.

The Tory government and Tory council's reaction was to shut-out local residents. The prime minister and council leaders did not meet residents. They all tried to delay the inquiry and then blame, can you believe it, the fire crews?

We have a rotten culture, created by austerity and privatisation. And 72 people burned to death because of it. If you think that's dramatic and over-stating the facts, I implore you to do your own research and make up your own mind.

Jeremy Corbyn is one of the few politicians who really understands the pain and the underlying reasons for it.

Firefighters are Angry

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, one-year after the fire, wrote to the prime minister citing "institutional indifference", "chaotic and inhumane" behaviour, and "repeated failures and broken promises from the government and Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea".
